Mavanee Hoyer – “It Pays” to use NO Days WINNER – March 2009

Gifts of Glass
Window Size: 48” x 96”

Restoring these church windows has been a very long process and the time has been cut down in weeks using the NO Days Glaze.  No messy clean up and the windows are extremely strong and sealed tight with no air gaps at all.

I absolutely loved using the NO Days Glaze product. I found it incredibly easy to work into the construction of my piece. I used the quick cure method and allowed for the additional heart thickness. This change was very easy because I use glass design software to create my patterns so I just entered the new heart thickness and the adjustment was made. I wasn’t sure how much additional time would be spent on adding the strip of glaze to the lead while constructing so I was a little leery at first. But I found that I spent only an extra couple of seconds per strip. If you can cut lead, then you can build a piece with NO Days Glaze. The time spent on adding the strips of NO Days Glaze to your lead during construction adds up to be far less time then is spent using the cement method. Furthermore, after my piece was soldered I used my heat gun and watched the product go to work. The glaze expanded around the glass and you can just tell that it is creating a far stronger window then the cement method. And after heating up the front side you are done!! You don’t need to flip the piece over and do anything to the other side, what a time saver. Cementing a project was always a very tedious and dreaded part of building a lead window for me.  I just knew there had to be a better way!!

NO Days Glaze is the future of our industry and I for one am embracing this new technology and in turn am increasing my production dramatically! Thank you for making such an incredible product!

My experience with the NO Days Glaze started because I wanted to find the best techniques and materials to use when repairing a stained glass window.  Although glazing is just one step in the process, I believe it to be a very important one.

I sincerely believe that the original artists and craftsmen who created these old works of art would want to use the best methods for the assembly and preservation of their work.  Unfortunately for them, NO Days Glaze wasn’t around 100 years ago!  After using NO Days Glaze myself, I believe these artists and craftsmen were here now, they wouldn’t hesitate to use this new method.

My journey to find the best way to repair a stained glass window began because there is many beautiful windows here at Trinity Church that need to be repaired. I picked one that is presently boarded up because it is in very bad condition, and it is easily accessible to me.  The part of the window I picked had some broken and warped glass pieces. The lead came was also warped and twisted, separated in areas and had a white powdery substance on much of it. Someone had even used silicone caulk to keep it from falling out. It’s amazing what can happen over more than a century! I carefully removed the triangular window section, took pictures of it for reference and began the process of slowly taking it apart.

Once apart and cleaned, I cut strips of NO Days Glaze to length and put it inside the channel of each new lead came. I used the Hobby Method of assembly so the size of the repaired window would be the same size as the original and easily fit back into its original frame.

I've uploaded two pictures. The first one shows how NO Days Glaze holds up with NO SOLDER! I had a friend hold it by one corner while I took a picture. To me, that is amazing! I like the way you can see how strong this product actually is in use. It’s impossible to determine the strength cement or putty adds to the window because it is done AFTER soldering.

Another thing I like about using NO Days Glaze on the window is that I could actually put the window into its frame to check it. Although there weren't any errors or adjustments necessary, it was nice to know that I could easily disassemble the part of the window that was in question and make the changes here before proceeding to the soldering step.

The second picture shows how the window looks installed back in its frame. You can easily see the new shiny lead came and clean glass contrasting the rest of this fine old piece of stained glass art.

To me, this window seems to be silently asking its observer to please restore it back to its original beauty, remove the plywood covering and expose it for the public to enjoy once more. I'm sure that the designers, artists, craftsmen and original members of the church would enthusiastically agree…

Moises Colon

Window Size: 83.88” x 141.25”

This job has three windows: two smaller ones measuring 43.25”(h) by 58.5” (w) and a big one measuring 83 7/8” (h) by 141 ¼”(w). All follow an original landscape design inspired by a very beloved and traditional Puerto Rican tree, the Flamboyant (Delonix regia), in three times of day: sunrise, mid-day and sunset. All three windows share the same degree of construction complexity: traditionally cut stained glass, traditional glass painting and fused glass.

In terms of soldering I used the copper foil and cane techniques. The smaller windows were done first using the traditional glaze method, which besides being very time- consuming to apply, involves a terrible mess and an awful smell. Also, it requires a lot of time to dry before the panel can be moved or turned, taking a lot of precious time and space in the workshop. Looking desperately for ways to save time and effort, I spotted a NO Days Glaze ad in a glass-specialized magazine and considered the cost involved in such a big project. Was the cost worth the time saved? Definitely so! I was so pleasantly surprised that the most boring and tedious part of a panel was gone. The job moved smoothly from then on and the dead-line was met. And all without the usual mess! From now on NO Days Glaze is the way to go.

This is my 2nd leaded panel and my 1st project made with NO Days Glaze.  “Blanket Flower” is my original design inspired by the brilliant red wild flowers with yellow rims which grow in the spring along roadsides here in Texas.

Before trying NO Days Glaze, I had avoided working with lead because of the messy cementing and whiting process.  I read about NO Days Glaze when I was looking for an alternative to cement, while planning a large 6-panel lead project.  After going to the Streuter Website and watching the “How To” videos, I decided to experiment with NO Days Glaze on a smaller project using the Hobby Cure Method.

NO Days Glaze is easy to use and the cleanup is a snap.  Being able to reheat and adjust glass placement is an unexpected plus.  The finished strength of the glass is amazing.  I’ll never us cement again.  I love NO Days Glaze!

I have never used the whitening powder method, so I have no experience with that mess. I just know that NO Days Glaze is absolutely a joy to work with. Sometimes my husband helps by holding my project while I heat the glaze with the heat gun.  It's a good way for us to get some together time.  NO Days Glaze is the best product I've used for finishing the borders of my projects.

Window Size: 40” x 40”

This was my first project with No Days Glaze and I found it very easy to use. A simple touch of the heat gun held the window together and provided stability. I no longer needed to worry about the mess of cementing with this new technique. Even when I needed to redo a piece, it was easy to reheat the NO Days Glaze and remove it. I will definitely use it again!

I enjoyed using it so much I ordered another roll.  Thank you for making lead work easy and the best of all its not messy!!!!  Can make something in a day and be able to display it the same day...you don't have to wait for cement to dry.

Margo Moore - “It Pays” to use NO Days WINNER – November 2008

Window Size: 32" x 19.5"

This was my first leaded window as well as my first made with NO Days Glaze. I loved the way the NO Days Glaze held the pieces in place with no chance of shifting while assembling the window. The best thing, though, is that there is no worry about getting cement into the heavily textured pieces of fracture streamer glass and the antique depression plate in the center of the window. I love NO Days Glaze!

Using the product for the borders and outside cloud gave the window strength and made it easier to handle. The feathers were more of a challenge, especially the small ones in the body. I cure the NO Days Glaze as I leaded the panel so it wouldn’t grow. In spite of the overall size of the glass (though built in three sections), I felt the NO Days Glaze provided enough rigidity to not use the brace bar. Not using brace bar is something I would not of considered with traditional glazing compound.

Edward Giebel

Window Size: 72” x 8”, 54” x 8” and 36” x 8”

Assembling these windows was a breeze with NO Days Glaze and I really like the fact I could glaze the window prior to soldering and check the fit before I started soldering. As I decided on using NO Days Glaze after I had cut most of the glass, I use the hobby cure method in lieu of grinding down the 70 pieces of glass I had fitted. Still, it took less time to assemble the windows than it would have taken to glass one side using traditional glazing products and then wait to cure, then do the other side. The fact that I could soften the NO Days Glaze and adjust the pieces save me a couple of times.

I am a firm believer in NO Days Glaze and have recommended it as my local glass shop. I will be using NO Days Glaze for my next interior project here in Phoenix, AZ.

This is my second time using NO Days Glaze. I love it and getting much better at using it. It is easy to use and I love the results and the easy clean up. My picture had bevels and different depth of glass and NO Days Glaze worked great for those differences.

Peggy Leffel

Window Size: 34” x 17”

I used NO Days Glaze with all the lead in this panel. Due to the odd shape of the panel, I was able to use the NO Days Glaze and make needed adjustments easily. It was so nice to finish without messing with the putty and also knowing it is secure. Another plus is that with the formulation of the product, using NO Days Glaze and the how the heat is here in Texas, there was no concern.

Thanks to NO Days Glaze, I was able to assemble my stained glass panel without any mess. I was able to modify part of my pattern as I was working without disassembling all the pieces. I am happily surprised by the strength that the NO Days Glaze gave my work and how easily I could manipulate the piece as soon as the panel was assembled.

I am in the process of restoring 33 windows that are 300 years old in a church and NO Days Glaze cuts my time by so much. It would take me almost 2 weeks the old fashioned way of puttying and whiting just for one window. With the NO Days Glaze, it took me a total of 1 week from start to finish for all 33 windows. The bond is water tight and the clean up is excellent. NO Days Glaze is the best product you can use for leaded windows.

This is my first piece using only NO Days Glaze instead of cement. Using NO Days Glaze was incredibly easy. I used the Hobby Cure Method, heating and fitting each piece as I went along. There are four clear fused pieces included which are thicker that regular glass. I use the clear NO Days Glaze to set these pieces so that there would be nothing visible except for the glass and the lead (which was very successful). If any pieces needed adjusting, it was easy to re-heat and remove and adjust and replace as I was going along. Best of all, there was no smelly, dirty cement to deal with!

Window Size: 30” x 36”

This was about a 100 year old window that was in a wood frame that had deteriorated terrible over time. The client wanted to preserve the glass. I took it out of the wood and put it back together with lead came. The hard part was the glass did not want to match up (6 panels). I used all of the original glass except a few replaced clear pieces that were cracked. The easy part of this whole process was the NO Days Glaze. I love it and plan to do 2 more old windows with it again.

Window Size: 46” x 46”

I took my first stained glass class in July of this year, 2008. This was my 5th project. First 2 projects were foil and 2 others were constructed with lead came and then cemented. Cementing made quite a mess. I tried the NO Days Glaze on my 5th project and was very excited. This was a very large project for my bathroom window and I wanted to take my time. I was able to interrupt my construction at any point. More importantly, my panels were stronger then my cemented ones. NO Days Glaze has turned me into a stained glass addict. Thanks!

I used 3 different colors of NO Days Glaze depending on the color of the glass. That was not necessary as in my design, the glaze did not show. However, the glass in my finished piece accidentally got broke. I peeled away the top of the lead, re-heated the glass in question and lifted it out. What I loved was when I replaced the glass, I heated each piece with the new NO Days Glaze so it stayed in place when I re-applied the lead. Worked like a dream!!!!

I have made several panels with NO Days Glaze. This one was much easier that the others because I chose a standard round H zinc came. It was relatively easy to keep the NO Days Glaze in the channel. I placed each piece of the glass and set it with the heat gun before moving on. One panel I made called for a shallow channel pointed zinc came from Chicago Metallics for a FL Wright Design.

Lynn Eichinger

Sunrise Art Glass Window Size: 7” x 31”

This design for a client's kitchen cabinet was a variation on a Frank Lloyd Wright-style design they liked. We gradually moved from clear textured glass to colors, which brightened up an otherwise monochromatic kitchen. I have done one large panel (36” x 48”) and over a dozen cabinet inserts with NO Days Glaze as well as a door panel with putty and find I much prefer working with NO Days Glaze. After working with a puttied panel, I became much more appreciative of the solidity of an NO Days Glazed panel that occurs as you build it. When you melt the NO Days Glaze as you go, each piece is firmly set into place and prepping the next piece is much easier than with a puttied panel, especially when dealing with small pieces that shift easily in the puttied panel. In addition, the NO Days Glaze panel is incredibly solid after it is built!!! This is a great advantage for cabinets which are opened and closed often or sometimes opened and closed with carelessness.

NO Days Glazed panels can also be lifted while in progress, long before the solder goes on, which allows you to make adjustments or check the impact of the color choices. With NO Days Glaze, it is also easy to make changes during the build by re-melting the NO Days Glaze if necessary. In fact, soldering is more of an artistic aspect than a necessary structural process because of the inherent strength of the NO Days Glaze panel. I suspect you could hang an unsoldered NO Days Glaze panel and have it last quite well. A couple times, I discovered a missing solder point in my home cabinets after hanging a panel, with no ill effects.

I also prefer the final finishing and clean up process with NO Days Glaze. I find that the more I use NO Days Glaze, the neater my work is and that a hobby knife is the best tool for removing any excess that has squeezed onto the glass. Even cleanup on textured glass is rarely a challenge. NO Days Glaze cleanup is faster than working with putty, although, the skills required are quite different and I have more experience with NO Days Glaze. NO Days Glaze also does not create the mess and the odor that putty does, which in my small studio in a storage area under our house, is very much appreciated.

I tracked my time with both construction methods (putty and NO Days Glaze) and discovered that the time saved was largely saved with the NO Days Glaze because of the way the pieces kept shifting around and constantly and needed to be readjusted when using putty. I found that panel construction even using the 'melt-as-you-go' hobby cure method process was even a time saver over putty and the end result was usable sooner because you don't have the wait time that putty imposes.

Overall, I am very happy with my NO Days Glaze experience and will continue to use it for my came projects.

Using NO Days Glaze has revolutionized our process.  The time savings from not having to mud and scrub the piece is amazing.  An unexpected bonus is how much cleaner our shop is!  The best part is being able to pick up a piece I progress, see it in the light and change colors or textures is needed.  The ability to stop in the middle of a panel to consult with a customer to make sure they get exactly what they want is priceless.  Anyone who tries NO Days Glaze is going to absolutely Love It!

I used the method of NDG Construction whereby each individual piece is secured as the window is built rather than heating the whole window at once.  I was immediately struck by how sturdy the window was that I built.  A huge advantage of the NDG over the standard method of leading is that once a piece is in…..IT IS IN!  And I don’t have to worry about it slipping back out of place.

I hope everyone likes my window as much as I do.  I will soon build a wooden frame for it so I can hang it as a testament to my creative uses of NO Days Glaze!

My project was for a vision panel inside a custom wood door.  The client did not want to see any re-bars and I was concerned that a thin panel that was 66” high would require reinforcement.  They also wanted a peephole so they could see who was outside because the glass chosen was not transparent.  I chose to use NO Days Glaze for this project since I thought it would resolve the issue of supporting the panel without reinforcement.

This was a simple project with a simple design, plus an interesting application of a more elegant nature.  I’m glad I did not have to putty the window.  The NDG provided a more elegant solution and one that will last for many years to come.  My client was thrilled with how it looked in the door.  And everyone played with the peephole.  Thank you NO Days Glaze and Streuter Technologies.  NO Days Glaze will be used on many future projects in our studio.

I am a disabled veteran who was recently been diagnosed with a rare lung disease.  A few years ago, I was forced to quit working.  At the time, my life long hobby of stained glass became a driver in my life and kept me feeling like I still had a purpose in life.  It is not always easy, but I create what I can, when I can, and at my own pace.

As my disease has progressed, though, I have found that the end process of puttying and polishing a piece had become far too difficult for me requiring rapid movement and ultimately causing me to loose my breath.  Eventually, this caused me to give up my stained glass passion…..that is until I found NO Days Glaze.  It is Amazing!  I can still create my art and I don’t need to go through the rigorous process of puttying.  I simply use the NO Days Glaze and Bam!...My piece is done.  It has literally brought art back into my life.  It is so simple.  Thank you NO Days Glaze!  You have brought some purpose back and made stained glass fun and rewarding again!!!!!!

This lampshade size was difficult to make.  I cut supporting wedges, used ¼” came and NO Days Glaze.  After I quickly had two sides secured, I added two more to a half.  Then repeated for the other half and they met almost perfectly.  This shade was extremely strong due to the NO Days Glaze.  Because of the weight of the panels, traditional lamp shade procedures were not working.  It kept coming apart.  But not with NO Days Glaze and minimal soldering.

I used NO Days Glaze for 7 kitchen cabinet inserts and loved the stability it gave to the panels even during the building process.  When the contractor broke 2 edges during installation, it took less than 30 minutes to deconstruct and repair the broken pieces.  It was easy to use from the start, but increased experience with the NO Days Glaze has improved my technique and reduced my cleanup time.

Our project involved Parishioners with little or no stained glass experience.  In the building there are 40 Clerestory windows for our chapel.  Our theme was “Darkness in the light” salvation history from the FLL (Purples) to the Resurrection (Yellows).  We would of never been able to do this without NO Days Glaze because the traditional cementing process would have overwhelmed the Parishioners with it’s difficulty.  We began in June and gave 40 people 8 weeks of classes.  They built their windows with ease thanks to the NO Days Glaze simplification of the building process.  Our Parish astounded with beauty of the windows and that they were built by beginners.  Our next project is an additional 36 windows inside the main sanctuary.  They will be made with NO Days Glaze…of course!

Armando Coello

Window Size: 23.75” x 19.75”

When I began doing stained glass about 4 years ago as a hobby, I never expected it to be so addicting.  Before the NO Days Glaze, I have made a few lead came panels using the traditional method of reinforcing the glass with cement.  Cementing is smelly, dusty, a chore of mixing the components, a chore to apply to your window and takes several sessions to clean up not only for my panel, but also for my work room.

NO Days Glaze offers a clean and odorless solution at the same time provides reinforcement of the panel.  The bonding is stronger allowing, if one chooses, to pick up the unfinished piece of glass.  There is no curing time so when the last piece of glass is secure with the NO Days Glaze, the panel is ready for enjoyment.

Wanting to try NO Days Glaze since reading about it in one the magazines I subscribe to, I finally purchased a 100 foot roll but was not ready to jump into anything new yet so there the roll sat.  The time finally came, one week later, when one of my customers called and asked if she could have her windows early that she ordered, next week, for her husband’s 60th birthday party, and the 30 or more invited guests.  Loving a challenge and having a large roll of NO Days Glaze at hand, I was ready.  The beginning was like having two left hands, but by the time I was 1/3 done, I was moving right along.  I finished the window in one day.  Heated, cleaned, and setup the next window to finish the next day.  Both windows were installed 2 days before the birthday party and everyone was thrilled (Especially my client).  I know if I win this competition the panel needs to be shipped….no problem.  I have another 100 foot roll and could build and ship in 2 days with NO Days Glaze.  Thank you for your product and a new time saving product for my studio.  Thank you.

Sara Jarvis

Jara Glassworks
Window Size: 36” x 48”

I decided to use NO Days Glaze for this panel because of it’s size (3” wide x 4’ at the arch peak) and it’s composition.  Some elements of it’s design are very detailed and feature small pieces of circa ½ inch in size such as the stained glass windows in the church and the small areas for the raven’s eyes.  As a counter-balance, the skyscape features some large pieces of glass.  The biggest of them at circa 13” x 20”

NO Days Glaze gave me the flexibility to include and lead the small and medium sized pieces of the design without difficulty while providing stability, stiffness and strength around the larges pieces.  Given the size of the panel, some additional reinforcement was essential but I did not want to use re-bar which would visually interrupt the project.  Instead, I reinforced the vertical lines of the tree, the horizontal lines of the peaks topmost edge and some of the Sun’s Rays with a re-strip which fitted easily between the came’s heart and the NO Days Glaze.  The combined stiffness of the re-strip and the NO Days Glaze indicated sufficient strength and stability allowing me to eliminate the re-bar that a traditional lead panel of this size would have required.

NO Days Glaze is Awesome!  Request a sample from Streuter Technologies when NDG first became available.  The timing was perfect as I had just completed fabrication of a large panel that was curing with putty on my work bench and taking up needed workspace.  I tried NDG on a small panel and it worked great!  I thought “Okay, I’ll give this a try on a much larger piece.”  Again, cut the glass, cut the lead, fit in the NDG, heated for 10 to 15 seconds and that piece was secure.  I finished in record time.

Since my first NDG Experience, I have made eight or so panels using NDG.  All completed fast and securely.  I also highly recommend NO Days Glaze to my students who want to complete larger pieces.  I am overjoyed that there is no more mixing cement, brushing it in, brushing it off, cleaning tight corners and curing!  Thank You! Thank You!  Thank You!

My NO Days experience on a project this large was really good.  The customer was very happy to have an alternative to cementing especially for a kitchen application.  I did run into a snag when I thought I was ready to start soldering, my panel was too big.  It turned out to be an error in the design size…..and no, my panel did not grow on its own.  I actually had to dismantle and redesign the border pieces.  Thank God for the NO Days because I was able to keep 80% (the core of the design) of the unsoldered window all intact and stable while my corrections were being made.  This would not have been as easily done if it wasn’t for using NO Days Glaze.  There were also 16 other cabinet doors done in a complimenting pattern.  NO Rattling and Very Solid!

“Well I finally was able to use it for the first time and I might add I was very impressed with the way it performs.

I had a client come to the studio and asked me to build her a 18"X 36" Abstract Window for her home. After designing the window and looking at its size,  I knew then this would be the job I would try No Days Glaze on.

The only difference in the fabrication of this window and any others I built was to allow for the No Days Glaze during the cutting phase of the glass, it's the end result that speaks volumes.

I am very demanding when it come to the cementing process of my windows, I like to have very clean lines which is very time consuming and very hard to do with textured glass and cement. However, this is what sets Glass by Knight Studios apart from everyone else. No Days Glaze gives me the strength I want and the look I demand.

Thank You No Days Glaze."

“HI! I wanted to share with you the commissioned panel I did using your product. It was the first large scale came project I had done (first was a 10" square test with your sample NDG), and it turned out great! The client has had it installed in their home for several months, and are very happy with it.

I did have some challenges when I found that a piece near the center had cracked and I had to deconstruct it. Because the piece was large (37" x 45" --and my bench is only 32" wide), I had some difficulty melting and separating the sections -- I enlisted my husband's support and he tugged while I heated. Other than that, it was a good product to work with and helped the panel feel very stable -- probably got me feeling pretty superior about being so solid that I thought I could flip it without assistance when I was doing patina and cleanup, leading to the crack!

I am attaching two photos -- one before I did the repair and the second in its installed position in the home (you will see that one of the large arcs near the center picked up a second piece in the install.... ) The colors in the one prior to install are dark because of the redwood deck behind the glass. Unfortunately, at 11 sq ft, it is too large for your contest, but I am getting ready to do cabinet doors for my kitchen, so I hope to be able to compete."

Glass Mermaid
Window Size:  3” x 10” x 5” (8 sided Lamp Shade)

We were able to complete this client’s panel without rebar.  The NO Days Glaze really made a stiffer panel.  We have used other products in the past that have taken up to 72 hours to cure and did not provide the structural strength that NO Days Glaze has provided.

Thank you again for this Great Product!”
